On the highest hill to the southeast of the Holy City of Jerusalem, the town of Jabal Al-Mukabber is located on an area of 5021 dunums. Today, it is facing a new settlement project, which is eroding its lands, suffocating its residents, and increasing its siege and geographical isolation from its surroundings in the Holy City and West Bank cities.

Just as the occupation separated the neighborhoods of “Jabal Mukaber” from each other, and created isolation between the villages of Al-Sawahrah Al-Sharqiah and Al-Gharbiyeh, and Sheikh Saad neighborhood, it plans today to tighten and deepen the isolation of the Jerusalemite town.

In July, the mayor of the occupation in Jerusalem and the Director of the Israeli Housing Authority laid the foundation stone for the establishment of a Jewish neighborhood on the Jerusalem lands of Jabal Mukaber, in order to surround it with settlers from all sides.

Quantum leap

The Judaizing neighborhood bears the name “Nof Zion”, which is the same name for the settlement perched on an area of 114 dunums of the lands of Jabal Mukaber’s 30,000 Jerusalemites. The neighborhood includes settlement units, commercial and tourist centers for settlers.

A specialist in Jerusalem affairs, a member of the Committee for the Defense of Silwan Lands in Jerusalem, Fakhri Abu Diab, told Emirates Today: "The occupation laid the foundation stone for the establishment of a Jewish neighborhood on the Jerusalem residents' lands, with the participation of Jewish businessmen and investors in the private sector, Among them is the Israeli businessman Rami Levy.

He added: "With this, the occupation brought about a qualitative leap, related to allowing the Israeli investors and the private sector to participate in the seizure of lands (Jabal Mukaber), with the help of the occupation government and its security services, and the establishment of settlement units and selling or renting them to the Jews."

The aim of the occupation is to lay the foundation stone for the establishment of a Jewish neighborhood inside the town of Jerusalem, to besiege the Jerusalemite town of Jabal Mukaber with settlers and settlements from all directions, according to Abu Diab.

settler belt

The specialist in Jerusalem affairs indicates that the new Jewish neighborhood project on the lands of the town of Jabal Mukaber, establishes the largest settlement within the Arab neighborhoods in the city of Jerusalem.

It shows that the settlement neighborhood deepens the isolation between the neighborhoods of Jabal Mukaber from each other, from the West Bank, and from all the towns and villages of the Holy City, especially from Silwan and the Old City.

Abu Diab says: “The occupation is planning to establish a security settlement belt, to link the settlements of (Gilo) and (Jabal Abu Ghneim), which are located on Palestinian lands in the Holy City of Jerusalem, all the way to the Jerusalem town of Jabal Mukaber, and the settlements of (Ma’ale Adumim) are gathered on the lands of the Holy City. In order to facilitate the settlers’ access to the new neighborhood in (Jabal Mukaber).

The settlement neighborhood project, according to Abu Diab, includes the construction of 400 settlement units, two hotels, and huge commercial and sports centers, in addition to public buildings, all for settlers.

continuous demolition

The settlement neighborhood project is not the only thing that disturbs the sleep of Jerusalemites in the town of Jabal Mukaber, as the occupation continues to intensively issue demolition and eviction orders for residents’ homes in the city of Jerusalem, at a time when the occupation municipality in Jerusalem refuses to grant Jerusalemites a permit to build inside their lands.

On July 25, the Israeli municipality in Jerusalem forced Ali Shkeirat, a Jerusalemite, to self-demolish his house in the Al-Sala`a neighborhood in Jabal Mukaber town, under the pretext of building without a permit.

Shqeirat was forced to demolish his new house using hand tools, in order to avoid paying the exorbitant demolition costs. The Israeli municipality notified him of the demolition, otherwise its mechanisms would do so, and he had to pay the demolition costs.

Jerusalemites in Jabal Mukaber and the towns and neighborhoods of Jerusalem are forced to forcibly demolish their homes in order to avoid paying exorbitant sums, if the Israeli municipality implements the demolitions.

• The occupation brought about a qualitative leap related to allowing the Israeli investors and the private sector to participate in the seizure of the lands of "Jabal Mukaber", with the help of the occupation government and its security services, and to establish settlement units and sell or rent them to the Jews.
