The 43-year-old man, suspected of having killed his partner on the night of Wednesday to Thursday in Rennes, was indicted and placed in detention, we learned on Saturday from the Rennes prosecutor's office.

"Criminal judicial information under the qualification of murder by partner has been entrusted to an investigating judge of the judicial court of Rennes," said the public prosecutor Philippe Astruc in a statement.

He recognizes "significant violence"

According to the prosecutor, during his custody, the suspect admitted to having "exercised daily significant violence on his companion since Monday (August 17) on a background of jealousy and in a context of alcohol and medication".

If he "admitted to having stabbed him", the man affirmed not to have had "the intention to kill his companion", aged 40 years. The autopsy of the victim confirmed "the presence of three stab wounds including one fatal as well as numerous traces of violence", said the prosecution. It is the man himself who had alerted the emergency services on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, indicating having killed his companion in the apartment of the couple, who has no children.

The suspect was already sentenced in September 2016 by the Rennes criminal court to one year's imprisonment, including eight months with a two-year suspension of probation for acts of willful violence committed with weapon on partner (same victim) on November 26, 2015 ".

146 women were killed in 2019

To date, at least 47 suspected feminicides have occurred since the start of the year, according to an AFP count. In 2019, AFP identified at least 126 cases of women killed by their partner or ex, or a woman every three days on average.

According to figures from the investigation by the delegation to victims made public by the Ministry of the Interior on Monday, 146 women were killed in 2019 by their spouse or ex-companion, 25 more than the previous year.
