It was a witness who finally gave the alert, late Monday morning.

At around 11 a.m., a lifeless body was found washed up on a beach in Barre-de-Monts, Vendée.

According to the Maritime Prefecture of the Atlantic, this discovery occurred when a passenger ship had reported, an hour and a half before, the presence of an "unconscious individual" who was floating "near the Noirmoutier bridge" .

A speedboat from the Fromentine National Sea Rescue Society arrived at the scene around 10 a.m., but the sea rescuers had failed to locate the victim.
