Jaguar Land Rover is developing a prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) based on the new Land Rover Defender, which is expected to begin testing this year.

The British manufacturer aims to achieve zero polluting emissions by 2036, and zero carbon emissions across its supply chain, products and operations by 2039.

According to Jaguar Land Rover, hydrogen-powered vehicles provide high energy density and rapid refueling, as well as limited loss of range at low temperatures, making them ideal for larger and longer vehicles, or those used in extreme environments, such as off-roaders.

Since 2018, the number of fuel cell vehicles has almost doubled while the number of hydrogen stations has increased by more than 20%.

By 2030, it is estimated that the entry into circulation of vehicles running on hydrogen could exceed 10 million copies with 10,000 stations worldwide.
