A German virologist: Rapid tests for Corona with the advent of winter are important

German virus expert Christian Drosten stressed the importance of rapid tests for Corona with the advent of winter.

In a recording on the NDR radio entitled "Coronavirus Update," the expert who works at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin said yesterday, Tuesday, that it is necessary to proceed with the tests known as antigen tests.

He explained that such tests would be needed in the event of a wave of infection in the winter, indicating at the same time that these tests are not perfect, considering that despite the flaws in reliability they involve, but they have advantages such as speed and availability.

The expert wondered about the usefulness of the highly sensitive PCR test if one had to wait for three or four days for the results to emerge from overburdened laboratories.

Referring to visiting opportunities for the elderly, Drosten argued that conducting such tests at the entrance to a nursing home could achieve "an unbelievable amount of good."

At the same time, he stressed that the important thing is not to use any illogical tests because there is a liability associated with them, warning that in the event of an unannounced case of infection in a nursing home, for example, it is possible for an outbreak of infection to occur followed by deaths.

He said it should be clear who is allowed to take the tests.
