A fire of undetermined origin, which broke out early Thursday afternoon in the town of Cercoux, in the south of Charente Maritime, is "under control but not extinguished and it will probably still take all week -end to come to the end, "said Commander Samuel Cessac, of the Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS) of the department on Friday.

Some 150 firefighters, two Civil Security planes, around fifty tankers and reinforcements from Charente, Dordogne, Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne had been mobilized against this forest fire which made no impact. injured.

Six people, however, had to be evacuated as a preventive measure.

Firefighters on the alert

Sixty firefighters remained mobilized Friday "to monitor any new outbreak of fire in the disaster area which represents a loop of four kilometers", the same source said.

This is the third forest fire in the south of Charente-Maritime since Sunday and the prefect said in a statement to have asked the gendarmerie "to step up surveillance patrols in order to identify and proceed with the arrest. of any individual exhibiting suspicious behavior ”.

Last weekend, a major fire of undetermined origin burned 300 hectares of forest, mainly pines, in the Médoc, in the north of the Gironde department.
