As China combats food waste through the "Leave Your Plate Blank" campaign, a university in Luoyang, Henan Province, central China, has begun offering hundreds of kilograms of fruit free of charge every day to students who finish all the foods on their plates.

As part of this initiative, students at Luoyang University can enjoy daily buffets at the university's restaurant, and replace their clean dishes with fruits.

In this, university officials say, the restaurant provides 750 kilograms of free fruits a day, such as apples, oranges and guavas, which is enough for the university's about 6,000 students.

Students welcomed the university’s idea, and some said they were happy to have free fruit while being encouraged to provide food, at the same time.

One of them commented on the Chinese social network Weibo, saying: “I must say that the reward is a good incentive for me.” ».

And a 2018 survey by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the World Wide Fund for Nature found that urban restaurants in China throw more than 17 million tons of food every year, enough to feed millions of people a year.
