Zeitz / Weißenfels (dpa / sa) - cities in the Burgenland district should become more attractive for residents and new settlers in the course of structural change in the lignite region.

The state is supporting the first five projects in Zeitz and Weißenfels to renovate the old town with around nine million euros.

This brings Saxony-Anhalt a whole step closer to the goal of developing the region into a livable, sustainable and attractive place for employees and skilled workers, said Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) on Wednesday.

One of the projects is an educational campus in Weißenfels.

This is to be created by connecting the former Sankt Claren monastery, which has been vacant for years, with the Goethe Gymnasium.

The district's adult education center and music school should also find a home there.

In Zeitz, on the other hand, a multi-generation house is to be set up in a historic building with the help of the funding.

In addition, a barrier-free special needs school, the design of the former Herrmannschacht briquette factory as an industrial museum and attractive offices for the settlement of new institutions and companies are planned.

The Burgenland district is one of the regions in Germany that are particularly affected by the planned phase-out of coal.

The lignite miner Mibrag, one of the largest employers in the area, which stretches from the south of Saxony-Anhalt to Saxony, is based in Zeitz.
