Berlin / Kiel (dpa / lno) - The federal government is funding the expansion of the fiber optic network in Dithmarschen with 30 million euros.

The Federal Minister for Digital Infrastructure, Andreas Scheuer (CSU), gave a virtual grant to the Bundestag members Astrid Damerow and Mark Helfrich (both CDU) on Wednesday, as they announced in Berlin.

The federal funds must be supplemented by regional funds in the same amount.

Helfrich spoke of an important stage in the expansion of the fiber optic network in the Dithmarschen district. "The corona pandemic with home office and homeschooling in particular shows us every day how important it is for our region to have fast internet coverage across the board." Damerow emphasized that broadband expansion was indispensable for public services of general interest. "Internet, television, digitized training, health care and much more depend on it."

The funds are also intended to provide remote households with high-speed internet.

According to the two MPs, around 95 percent of Dithmarsch households are included in the expansion plan of the Broadband Association in cooperation with the Neumünster municipal utility.

With the federal funds and the prospect of co-financing by the state, the connection of the remaining five percent of households is now secured.
