In the heat of the Martyrs of Pentecost stadium in Kinshasa, on the third day of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, the Congolese players got back to work against Madagascar on Thursday, October 7, winning 2-0.

After the draw (1-1) against the Squirrels of Benin in September, on behalf of the 2nd day of Group J of these qualifiers, the Congolese had to win against the Malagasy, who brought up the rear with zero points before this meeting .

Chadrac Akolo, a kid from Kinshasa, who plays for SC Paderborn 07 in Germany, opened the scoring in the first half in the 35th minute after an assist from Dieumerci Mbokani.

A few minutes earlier, Cédric Bakambu, author of 3 goals in 2 games against the Malagasy during his international career, had the opportunity to put the leather in the net with a whim.

Another home meeting for the DRC

There remains one home game for the DRC in these qualifiers. It will be at the time of the 6th and last day. During the next two trips, first to Madagascar and then to Tanzania, the Leopards will want to continue this momentum before finding home and hoping to be among the ten nations to compete for the five qualifying places reserved for the Africa for the final phase of the next World Cup in Qatar.

The Squirrels of Benin, traveling to Tanzania, ended their meeting with a victory (1-0) which allows them to take the lead of Group J thanks to a goal from Steve Mounié in the second half (72nd). With 7 points on the clock and no defeat at the halfway point (two wins, one draw), they are leaders ahead of the DRC (5 points) and Tanzania (4 points). Madagascar remains dead last, with still no points scored.

At the same time, Cape Verde beat Liberia in Group C (2-1).

Van-Dave Harmon opened the scoring (45th + 3), but the visitors equalized by Jamiro Monteiro, barely entered (52nd), before snatching victory in added time thanks to Garry Rodrigues (90th + 2 ).

The Cape Verdeans grab second place with 4 points ahead of their victim of the day (3 points), while waiting for the match between Nigeria (leader, 6 points) and the Central African Republic (last, 1 point).
