  May 31, 2020 is the 33rd World No Tobacco Day. The 2019 Chinese Tobacco Survey for Middle School Students released on the same day covered 347 counties (cities and districts) in 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country, with a total of 288,192 students participating in the survey.

  The survey results show that the proportion of Chinese junior high school students who tried to smoke cigarettes in the past five years has now dropped significantly. At the beginning of 2019, the proportion of middle school students trying to smoke cigarettes was 12.9%, and now the proportion of smoking cigarettes is 3.9%, which is a decrease of 5 percentage points and 2 percentage points compared with 2014.

  It is worth noting that the proportion of Chinese junior high school students who have heard of e-cigarettes and now use e-cigarettes has increased significantly in the past five years. At the beginning of 2019, the proportion of middle school students who had heard of e-cigarettes was 69.9%. Now the e-cigarette utilization rate is 2.7%, which is an increase of 24.9% and 1.5% respectively compared with 2014.

  For the first time, the survey included the smoking situation of high school students nationwide in the tobacco survey of middle school students. It was found that the smoking rate of high school students is much higher than that of junior high school students. In 2019, the proportion of high school students who tried to smoke cigarettes, now smoke cigarettes, and now use e-cigarettes was 24.5%, 8.6%, and 3.0%, which were higher than those of junior high school students. Among them, vocational school students are higher than ordinary high school students, respectively, 30.3%, 14.7% and 4.5%.

  The survey results also show that the exposure of second-hand smoke among Chinese middle school students has improved, but it is still relatively serious, and there are still phenomena of teachers smoking on campus. Compared with 2014, the proportion of people who saw smoking at home, indoor public places, outdoor public places or public transportation in the past 7 days of early middle school students in 2019 has decreased significantly, but it is still as high as 63.2%; seen in the past 30 days The proportion of people smoking on campus and the proportion of teachers who saw smoking in schools almost every day were 45.2% and 8.5%, respectively, a decrease from 2014.

  The school ’s education on tobacco control health has made some progress, but the awareness of smoking addiction among middle school students needs to be further improved. The proportion of junior high school students who have learned the specific health hazards caused by tobacco use in the classroom in the past 12 months is 58.6%, which is an increase from 2014.
