Thousands of nationalists marched through Jerusalem in a controversial flag march.

Around 5000 participants waved Israeli flags at the event on Tuesday.

In clashes with the police near the old city of Jerusalem, 17 Palestinians were injured before the march, according to the Israeli media, citing the Palestinian rescue service Red Crescent.

The route should also lead through the Muslim quarter of the old city of Jerusalem, which Palestinians perceive as a special provocation.

The two largest Palestinian organizations, Fatah and Hamas, had called for a "day of anger" in view of the march.

According to the Jerusalem city administration, around 2,000 police officers were supposed to secure the march.

About 5000 participants were expected.

According to a report by the Jerusalem Post, the Israeli army transferred additional forces to the West Bank.

Defense Minister Benny Gantz, at a meeting with security authorities, stressed the need to "protect the personal safety of Israeli citizens, Jews and Arabs alike".

Supporters of ex-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu organized the march of the nationalists. This put the new government of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett from the ultra-right Jamina party under pressure. The most recent such march on the occasion of the so-called Jerusalem Day was canceled on May 10 because of rocket attacks by Hamas, which ruled the Gaza Strip.
