• The next edition of the Route du Rhum will start on November 6 from Saint-Malo.

  • 138 competitors will be at the start of the solo transatlantic race, a record.

  • In addition to the first 120 registered, the organizers will grant wild cards to 18 sailors.

Once again, the show promises to be spectacular.

On November 6, an armada of boats will set off like every four years from Saint-Malo for the 12th edition of the Route du Rhum.

The 2022 vintage will also be that of all records for the solo transatlantic race since 138 candidates will be at the start, the organizers announced on Wednesday.

"This fleet of 138 sailors will allow the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe to enter a little further into the legend of ocean racing by being the first to line up so many solo sailors on a single starting line and on a one and the same course, ”they congratulate themselves in a press release.

We already know the names of the first 120 registered, a list in which we find all the big names in sailing such as Thomas Coville, François Gabart (finally authorized to participate), Jérémie Beyou, Armel Le Cléac'h or Francis Joyon, winner of the edition in 2018. This fleet will be reinforced by the end of April by 18 sailors who will benefit from a wild card.

The basins of Saint-Malo full to bursting

A boost that will require some adjustments in the basins of the corsair city which will be full to bursting.

"The number of applications received in recent months has prompted us to look for a solution to welcome even more sailors and allow them to take part in the most famous of the single-handed transatlantic races, while respecting our commitment to bring everyone into the basins in Saint-Malo", justifies Hervé Favre, president of OC Sport Pen Duick.

Unfortunately, not everyone will have the chance to take the start because the organizers have received a total of 149 files since the opening of registrations in July 2021. Eleven sailors will therefore remain at the dock.

But the situation could still change because the final registration of competitors will not take place until October 25, once the sailors and their boats have completed all the formalities imposed by the notice of race.
