11 students drown in a river during a school trip in Indonesia

Eleven middle school students drowned while trying to cross a river during an expedition in Indonesia's West Java province, an official said Saturday.

The students were walking along a river in Ciamis as an extracurricular activity when the accident occurred on Friday, according to district leader Herediat Sunaria.

Sonaria explained that it seemed that a strong current attracted the students aged between 12 and 15 as they were crossing the river.

"The search teams found all the victims at the mouth of the river," he added. Several teachers were seriously injured while trying to rescue their students.

Local media reported that the picnic was attended by 150 students from Harappan Baru Islamic School.
