In a statistical study published this Thursday, INSEE looked at the first names given to newborns in Hauts-de-France since 1946. It emerges from the analysis of the institute that the parents of today They have a much wider choice of baptizing their child than they did 75 years ago.
When a baby was born in 1946, its parents usually chose a given name from among the 2,000 or so popular at the time. A panel already provided which was to occupy many sleepless nights. In those distant times, the most fashionable first names were Jean and Martine, like the mayor of Lille, Martine Aubry, born in 1950. And when a first name was popular, it was no joke. In the region, it is still 12% of boys born in 1946 who were named Jean.
From the 1990s, the "catalog" of first names began to grow seriously.
According to INSEE, in 2020, more than 10,000 different first names were given to newborns.
And there again, there are the stars like Léa, Jade, Lucas or Léo.
Small difference, however, if these first names are indeed the most popular today, they are found in a smaller proportion in the population than the favorite names of 1946, precisely because of diversification.
