Houthi military spokesman Brigadier-General Yahya Sari said Houthi air defenses shot down an American MQ-9 plane with a missile in Dhamar province.

He added that the missile was developed locally and will be revealed soon at a press conference, stressing that the Yemeni airspace is no longer as permissible as it was, and that the coming days will see great surprises "as we have the ability to neutralize a large number of hostile aircraft."

"We are aware of reports that an American MQ-9 was shot down over Yemen. We have no further information to provide at this time," the US military's Central Command said in a statement.

The US military announced in June that Houthi militants in Yemen shot down a US drone with the help of Iran.

US drones regularly fly overhead and carry out raids targeting presumed locations of the so-called AQAP wing.
