There will be two Nobel Prize for literature this year, two authors will be rewarded this Thursday, October 10. A "catch up" after the scandal last year. The Academy could not deliberate for want of a quorum, several members had to resign after Jean-Claude Arnault, the French husband of one of the academicians, was sentenced to two years in prison for rape.

This Thursday, the professor of literature Mats Malm, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy since June 1st, will leave his office, place of the Stock Exchange, in Stockholm. At 1 pm, he will announce the two Nobel Laureates for Literature for the years 2018 and 2019.

This double price refers to the debacle of last year. The Academy had lost its reputation. Seven of its members had been forced to resign following accusations of rape and sexual assault by several women against Frenchman Jean-Claude Arnault, husband of one of the academicians. He will be sentenced to two years in prison.

The Grail of the novelists

The scandal had brought to light the silences and arrangements of an old house in a country where feminism and transparency are erected in principle. Disarticulated, the Academy had had to give up awarding its prize. A group of intellectuals had then autosaisi to award an alternative Nobel to the Guadeloupe Maryse Condé.

The Nobel Prize for Literature remains the Grail of novelists, poets and playwrights, the ultimate march before posterity. It is accompanied by a check for 9 million Swedish kroner, approximately 850,000 euros. The 2019 edition will have to be exemplary, it is for the moment the only certainty.
