The crash of the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft of Ethiopian Airlines this week was of global concern, especially as it was the second time in less than six months that the model was hit by a fatal crash.

The United States has joined several countries that have prevented the Boeing Max from flying; President Donald Trump Wednesday issued an immediate injunction banning all Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9 flights in his country.

In response to this serious event, The Hill published some information about the controversial Boeing 737 Max.

The Boeing 737 Max 8 crash in Ethiopia on Sunday, which killed 157 people on board, was the second after a similar plane crashed in October by Indonesia's Lion Air, 189 people.

Both incidents are under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board of the United States.

Max 8 and Max 9
The Hill reports that the crash in Ethiopia and Indonesia was limited to the Max 8 model, but Trump's no-fly resolution also included the Max 9 model.

The most obvious difference between the two models is the size; while the Max 8 is about 130 feet long and seats 200, the Max 9 is about 10 feet tall and can seat 220 passengers.

The Max 9 is the least common; 41 out of a total of 387 Maxs have been sold and delivered to different airlines.

Although the causes of the crash still remain unknown, the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States issued an emergency directive to investigate the aircraft's flightworthiness following the crash of the Indonesian Air Force, which also included the Max 9 directive.

Boeing plans to add two new models to the 737 Max series, Max 7 and Max 10, and introduce them in 2019 and 2020.

Scope of use
According to the US Federal Aviation Administration, there are 387 Max 8 and 9 flying around the world, 74 of which are registered in the United States.

This figure is relatively small compared with the US aircraft fleet, but according to Boeing, the 737 Max is the fastest-selling aircraft in the company's history.

Since the first shipment of the Boeing 737 Max was delivered in 2017, Boeing has received more than 5,000 orders from more than 100 customers.

According to The Hill, the company delivered only 376 aircraft until February 2019, meaning that there were more than 4,600 orders accumulated.

Brian Sommers, an aviation expert with travel industry magazine Skift, says airlines are turning into the 737 Max series for their longer distances and fuel economy than other models.

Although the 737 Max is designed for long distances, it is used for all distances in the United States.

Stock declines
Chicago-based Boeing Co. (BP.N: Quote, Profile, Research) fell after its plane crashed in Ethiopia on Sunday.

Shares in Boeing fell more than 10 percent on stock exchanges last Monday, equaling more than $ 25 billion in value. Trump's decision to block the 737s Max 8 and 9 aircraft from flying temporarily eroded the stock price by three points before recovering.

However, Bryan Somers sees Boeing as likely to be in the long term because of its military contracts and the popularity of its other aircraft models.
