28 August 2019The challenge to the Golden Lion goes live. After the inauguration this evening with the film by Hirokazu Kore-eda "The truth", on the second day of the 76th Venice International Film Festival, three great operas will be staged and the first Hollywood stars - Brad Pitt and Scarlett Johanson - in addition to the first of the two female directors in competition, Haifaa Al-Mansour.

The first Saudi director of history presents herself in Venice with her "The Perfect Candidate", a film set in the most retrograde Saudi Arabia. A woman, unable to go freely on vacation because her father's permission has expired, decides to run for politics and enter into politics to change things. What appears to be an inalienable right turns into a long battle for the opposition it receives from the local community unprepared to accept the first woman in the municipal administration.

Then there is Noah Baumbach who brings to Venice "Storia di un matrimonio", a film that talks about a marital crisis and winks at Ingmar Bergman for his intimate profile. Star-studded cast: Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver take on the role of the two protagonists and Ray Liotta those of his lawyer during the painful divorce undertaken by theater director Charlie and actress Nicole. Divorce that passes from the pain of the small child who does not want the separation of his and from the nostalgia for what has been. The film, shot on a budget of $ 8.6 million, is produced by David Heyman's Heyday Films and Netflix, which also distributed it.

Brad Pitt, Liv Tyler, Ruth Negga and Tommy Lee Jones make up the cast of the highly anticipated "Ad Astra", a science fiction film directed by James Gray ("Two Lovers" 2008). The story tells the story of Roy McBride, cosmonaut played by Pitt, who goes to the ends of the solar system to find his lost father and discoveries that will lead him to doubt human nature and the role of men in the universe. The work marks the debut of James Gray in a science fiction film and, according to the director himself, "is a kind of 'Heart of Darkness' set in a space journey to the outer limit of our solar system".

In an interview with Collider, the director explained: "The sci-fi genre is complicated because usually there are fantasy elements that mix with fantastic ones. What I'm trying to do instead is the most realistic representation of space travel never realized in a film a way to say that space is terribly hostile for us. I have many hopes, but it is certainly an ambitious project ".
