The work marks the debut of James Gray in a science fiction film and, according to the director himself, "is a kind of 'Heart of Darkness' set in a space journey to the outer limit of our solar system".
In an interview with Collider, the director explained: "The sci-fi genre is complicated because usually there are fantasy elements that mix with fantastic ones. What I'm trying to do instead is the most realistic representation of space travel never realized in a film a way to say that space is terribly hostile for us. I have many hopes, but it is certainly an ambitious project ".
