The head of the Gambino clan, one of the great families of the Italian-American mafia of New York, was shot dead Wednesday night outside his home on Staten Island.

Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali was 53 years old, he was born in Sicily and several media reported his enthronement to the head of the Gambino clan, one of the great families of the Italian-American mafia of New York, to which he was already doing part for more than twenty years.

The assassination of Frank Cali comes a few days after the death, in prison, of Carmine Persico, chief of the Colombo clan, at 85 years old.

Gambino and Colombo are among the five great families of the Italian-American mafia of the northeastern United States, with the Bonanno, Genovese and Luchese.

The Gambino clan dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century and was once considered the most powerful in the United States. However, in 1992, John Gotti, the leader of the clan who became a national celebrity, was sentenced to life in perpetuity. a serious blow to the organization, which has never really recovered.

The Italian-American mafia has been inseparable from the history of the United States since the 1920s. It has, however, largely passed to the background since the early 2000s. Compounded by the Mexican cartels in the field of drug trafficking, but also by organizations related to the former Soviet Union or Asia, it has nonetheless remained active, as evidenced by a series of strokes in 2016 and 2017.
