The Venezuelan crisis continues to impact relations between Cuba and the United States. The US State Department announced on Thursday that it would prohibit the Cuban Minister of the Armed Forces from entering the United States, whom he accuses of having committed human rights violations by supporting Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. The measure prohibits entry into the United States to Leopoldo Cintra Frias and two of his children, Deborah Cintra Gonzalez and Leopoldo Cintra Gonzalez.

For Washington, General Cintra Frias "bears responsibility for Cuba's actions to support" the regime of socialist leader Nicolas Maduro, whose departure Washington wants to leave. "Along with Maduro's military and intelligence agents, MINFAR (Cuban Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces) has been implicated in serious human rights abuses and violations in Venezuela, including torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and punishment for anti-Maduro positions, "said US Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo.
The United States is one of about 50 states that recognize opponent Juan Guaido as the legitimate leader of Venezuela, but Cuba, like Russia and China, continues to support Nicolas Maduro.
