Facebook has been ordered to pay a $ 5 billion fine to the US authorities for failing to protect the data of its 2.7 billion users. LOIC VENANCE / AFP

The social network Facebook will have to pay $ 5 billion to the US authorities. The largest social network in the world has breached the data protection of its 2.7 billion users.

A record fine: $ 5 billion! The US federal regulatory authority has also reached an amicable agreement with Facebook, as revealed by the Wall Street Journal . Mark Zuckerberg's company will have to improve its data protection rules .

The fine, the largest ever imposed in the United States on a digital company, however, should barely scratch the financial health of Facebook.

55 billion turnover in 2018

Facebook is a juggernaut with insolent health, with $ 55 billion in revenue in 2018, including $ 22 billion in profits. This is the equivalent of the annual wealth of a country like Senegal.

The fine, already partially provisioned, is perfectly sustainable. The American Stock Exchange is not mistaken; she praised the amicable agreement between the social network and the federal regulatory authority, boosting Facebook action to its highest point of the year.

The terms of the agreement have not been made public. The Ministry of Justice still has to approve it, but the American company will have to accept certain restrictions in the use of the personal data of its users .

Facebook under fire from critics

Experts believe that these restrictions will not be too disabling for Facebook.

Personal data is the raw material of social networks, which then resell them to advertisers to target consumers.

Since the scandal of data leaks to the British firm Cambridge Analytica in 2018 , Facebook is under fire from critics in the United States and in several countries.

Some, like the cofounder of the network Chris Hughes, even call for the dismantling of this giant become overpowered.
