Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Wednesday (August 7th) urged Vladimir Putin to influence the pro-Russian separatists to stop an escalation of fighting after the death of Ukrainian soldiers in the east of the country.
Four Ukrainian soldiers were killed on Tuesday in an attack by pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country, the heaviest record since the start of a new truce two weeks ago.
" Long conversation "
At a press conference, Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he had a " long conversation " with the Russian president. " I told him that it does not bring us closer to peace. And I asked him to play his influence so that they (the separatists) stop killing our citizens. "
The Ukrainian president said he then called his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron and said he also wanted to contact German Chancellor Angela Merkel to organize an " urgent meeting " between the three leaders.
Zelenskiy claimed that the Ukrainian military would continue demining operations in the war zones and that "the construction of a bridge at the Stanitsa Lugansk checkpoint between the separatist and Ukrainian territories should be accelerated .
Nearly 13,000 dead
Since April 2014, nearly 13,000 people have died in eastern Ukraine, where a conflict against pro-Russian separatists has broken out after the popular Maidan uprising that led to the departure of a pro-Russian government in Kiev , followed by the annexation of the Ukrainian Peninsula of Crimea by Moscow.
