Two people were killed in a shooting in the eastern city of Halle on Wednesday, police said, and arrested one of the suspects who fled the scene.

The mass-circulation Bild daily reported on its website that the shooting took place in front of a synagogue, adding that a grenade was thrown at a Jewish cemetery.

"According to preliminary results, two people were killed in Halle, several bullets were fired, the suspects fled in a car, we are conducting urgent searches and asking residents to stay at home," local police wrote on Twitter.

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn confirmed that the main railway station in Halle had been closed.

The attack comes on Yom Kippur, the most important Jewish holiday.
