Tsunami warning in Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Cuba after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in the Caribbean

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami alert in the Caribbean Sea that affects Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Cuba, following an earthquake of magnitude 7.7.

The epicenter of the earthquake has been located in the sea, south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica, at an estimated depth of 10 kilometers, according to the American Geophysics Institute (USGS). The tremor had been cataloged of magnitude 7.3 at first but has been increased to 7.7.

The authorities of Cayman Islands have asked the population to evacuate the coast and go to high places since the tsunami could be particularly strong on its coasts.

The Pacific tsunami center has warned that waves of between 80 centimeters and one meter can occur.
