“Cooperation between Japan, South Korea and the United States is extremely important, especially since North Korea has repeatedly launched ballistic missiles, and the security situation in East Asia is quite tense,” said the Minister of Defense of Japan.

He encouraged South Korea to make a reasonable decision to extend the treaty.

His South Korean counterpart, in turn, advocated a diplomatic settlement of the situation, while noting that Tokyo’s actions to impose export restrictions led to the crisis.

Earlier, the Prime Ministers of Japan and South Korea, Shinzo Abe and Lee Nak Yong, recognized the need to normalize relations between the countries.

In late August, Japan announced the impossibility of a direct exchange of intelligence with South Korea due to complicated trade relations after Seoul removed Tokyo from the white list of commercial partners in response to a number of restrictive measures.
