The TikTok application, popular with adolescents for its short and fun video formats, announced Friday the installation of a regional center in Europe, located in Dublin.
Dubbed "data security and protection center", the Dublin site will be one of the three "regional hubs" of the application of Chinese origin, after San Francisco (United States) and Singapore.
Led by former Google and Facebook executive Cormac Keenan, it should allow the social platform to strengthen its "policies, technologies and moderation strategies while ensuring that they are adapted to the culture and context local ", according to a press release.
In Europe, TikTok has offices in Paris, London, Berlin and Dublin, and today employs around 300 people, the company told AFP. By the end of the year, the company aims to reach 1,000 people, including a hundred in Dublin.
According to data from the analysis company App Annie, TikTok was the 4th most downloaded app (excluding games) in the world in 2019, ahead of Instagram (Facebook) and behind the three other apps on the California social network. In France, it appears in 10th place in the ranking.
TikTok belongs to the Chinese start-up ByteDance, which has also launched a search engine and is now trying to carve out a piece of the cake from online advertising revenue.
