The summit will take place on Monday, September 23, the day before the so-called high-level week in the UN begins, as world leaders hold speeches at the General Assembly and several special meetings are held at the New York headquarters on everything from the Yemen crisis to migration.

This year, the UN Week is permeated by the climate issue. Last Friday, hundreds of thousands of people around the world demonstrated in a global strike for the climate, inspired by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. During the weekend, a youth summit was held at the UN headquarters, where Greta Thunberg, among others, spoke. Several in-depth meetings for today's climate meeting also took place.

The climate summit is aimed at governments as well as companies and representatives from civil society. Leaders from some 60 countries are expected to speak, including Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, France's President Emmanuel Macron, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to SVT News.

Nine tracks

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who called for the climate summit, asks world leaders, both governments and businesses, to come to New York with heightened ambitions to act and concrete plans on how the Paris Agreement should be implemented and how countries should work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"I want to hear how we are going to stop the increase in emissions by 2020, and dramatically reduce emissions to reach zero emissions by the middle of the century," Guterres said, according to the UN website.

A total of nine so-called action traces will be presented during the meeting. The tracks include energy, sustainable cities and infrastructure, sustainable methods of supporting agriculture, forests and other ecosystems and mobilization of young people and civil society. One of the tracks is about changing industries in the world and will be led by Sweden together with India.

The tracks strengthen and complement the implementation of the Paris Agreement, according to Johanna Lissinger Peitz, Environment Council of the UN Representation and Sweden's chief climate negotiator.

- The tracks reflect how one must act in climate work, she has previously told TT.

Not binding

However, the work on the nine green tracks is not binding and the meeting is not expected to lead to the adoption of any formal document. Instead, various leaders are expected to make promises. However, neither US President Donald Trump nor Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will attend the meeting.

Greta Thunberg starts the meeting together with Guterres.

From Sweden, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S) and Deputy Prime Minister and Climate Minister Isabella Lövin (MP) also attend the meeting. Companies such as LKAB, SSAB, Scania, Volvo AB and Ikea are also in New York during the UN week, according to Dagens Nyheter.

Paris Agreement

At a summit in Paris 2015, a global climate agreement was signed to curb global warming, which the UN Climate Panel has decided is due to human emissions of so-called greenhouse gases.

According to the agreement, global warming, among other things, should be limited to less than two degrees compared to pre-industrial times and global emissions should reach their highest level as soon as possible and then reduce it. In addition, the world's developed countries will contribute billion dollars annually in climate assistance to developing countries from 2020.

The Paris Agreement came into force on November 4, 2016, when enough countries ratified the agreement. In June of the following year, the United States withdrew since President Trump repeatedly questioned climate change.

In 1995, the UN began with climate summits, with COP1 in Berlin. The most recent climate summit, COP24, was held in Polish Katowice last December.
