- Asia: An Irish minor with a disability disappears in Malaysia
Malaysian police on Tuesday found the lifeless body of the Franco-Irish teenager with disabilities who disappeared 10 days ago in a nature reserve in Southeast Asia, although the causes of death are still unknown, according to Reuters.
The late 15-year-old Nora Quoirin and her family stayed on August 3 at The Dusan hotel in a nature reserve in the province of Negeri Sembilan, about 60 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur, Efe said.
"The family has moved to identify the body found today and have confirmed that the body is from Nora Anne," said Mohamad Mat Yusof, chief of the state police where the complex is located. The autopsy will take place on Wednesday morning, the official said.
The body, found 2.5 kilometers from the hotel, has been transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital, police say. Authorities initiated a criminal investigation when the disappearance occurred, police representative Mazlan Manson said, although the first investigations reveal that there is no evidence of a criminal act.
The day after the transfer to the nature reserve, the family discovered that the child was not in the room and that the window was open.
His relatives pointed in the early stages to the possibility of kidnapping as a cause of the disappearance of Quoirin, who has a developmental and learning disability, and physical malformations that prevent him from moving easily.
The mother of the child, Meabh Quoirin, thanked yesterday for the work of the police in the search and offered 50,000 ringgit (about $ 11,900) , donated by an anonymous businessman from Belfast, to help the investigation.
Some 353 people participated in the search for the young woman, a case that until now had been considered as disappearance, although without ruling out other possibilities.
