- Research: Bionic prostheses to reverse blindness
Researchers at the Institute of Optics of the Higher Council for Scientific Research have developed an intraocular lens capable of mimicking the lens of the eye and correcting presbyopia .
The new lens changes the way of focusing near and far objects regulated by the ciliary muscle, the CSIC reported Monday, which stressed that the achievement is the result of the Presbyopia project.
The project was funded by the European Research Council and had European and national grants with the objective of evaluating and accelerating its arrival on the market .
With age, the lens of the eye becomes more rigid and loses its ability to focus objects, and the definitive correction requires the replacement of the lens with a lens that is capable of mimicking the lens's function.
Now, scientists from the Institute of Optics of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), led by researcher Susana Marcos, have developed an accommodative intraocular lens that changes its shape to focus distant and near objects.
The research results have been published in the Optical Journal of the American Optical Society, the CSIC has reported.
Marcos has stated on the same note that the lens design has been computationally tested and the manufactured prototype has been evaluated experimentally mounted on a motorized system that emulates the radial forces of the ciliary muscle.
The researcher at the Andrés de la Hoz Institute of Optics has explained that "although there have been previous proposals for accommodative lenses, they have not demonstrated an effective power change"; while the new one has succeeded.
The new lens has received a "Proof of Concept" project, also from the European Research Council, to study its transfer to the market, and has been selected with a "HealthStart" project of the Autonomous Community of Madrid and with a "CaixaImpulse" Project .
