11 December 2019The White Island volcano in New Zealand, erupted with 6 victims on Monday, is now emitting poison gas and an increased seismic activity has forced rescuers to stop their efforts. The BBC reports this.

The appeal is still missing eight. Six are the confirmed victims, 25 people are in critical condition in the hospital with severe burns.

The volcano, known as Whakaari, exploded and overwhelmed with its debris dozens of tourists who were on the island. "I have talked to many people involved in the operation and I am very, very anxious to go there and bring their loved ones home," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told reporters.

Meanwhile, the victims are identified. "From 4:00 this morning the level of volcanic tremor has greatly increased on the island," the geological agency GeoNet said in a statement this morning. "The situation remains highly uncertain regarding the rest of the day". And new eruptions are not excluded in the next 24 hours.
