WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump "regrets" not increasing tariffs on China further, the White House said on Sunday.

White House spokeswoman Stephanie Gresham said in a statement that Trump's earlier comment that the escalation of the trade war with China could be "seriously misinterpreted".

"President Trump regrets not paying more fees," she said.

Trump was asked during a meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in France whether he had the possibility to reconsider the escalation of the trade war.
