Since the beginning of August, a number of thefts of electric cars in the Tesla brand have been stolen. The cars have been stolen from their home addresses in the areas Laholm, Västra Frölunda, Halmstad and on a number of occasions in Ljungby.

"Since it is very different, both in time and geographical area, we believe it is an international league," says Niklas Rånge, an analyst at the crime coordination in Halland.

Advanced technology

All these thefts have occurred at home addresses. The thieves then do is go to the front door of the Tesla owner, and use advanced technical equipment, to capture the car key signals. Once the signals are captured, the thieves will have full access to the car and can leave.

- The whole thing is over within a few minutes and it happens when the owner of the car is sleeping. In this way, they do not detect the thefts until the morning, says Niklas Rånge.

Interference transmitters make it difficult

The police are working to search for the stolen cars by processing the material they have received, but it is not easy.

- The thieves often put interference transmitters on the cars which means they cannot be tracked, so we try to track the cars without any success, says Niklas Rånge.

Special metal boxes

There are various ways to protect their electric car from being stolen. One of them is by purchasing a special metal box that blocks the key's signals. Another tip is to park the car inside a locked and alarmed room.

- There is a risk that more thefts of Tesla cars will occur in the near future. At present there are no suspects, says Niklas Rånge.
