• Profile: To found Android to run a prostitution network: Andy Rubin's scandalous life
  • Rubin and Singhal. Google offered $ 135 million to two executives accused of sexual harassment

Andy Rubin created the Android operating system in 2003 . Two years later his company, Android Inc., was acquired by Google. The rest is history, although one at times rugged. Today, the operating system he designed has an absolute dominance of the market but his legacy has been stained by the conditions in which he was forced to leave Google in 2014, with a generous compensation of 90 million dollars but also - as was known more late - due to a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a company worker.

After founding a new company, Essential , and launching a phone that finally had little impact on the market, Rubin decided to retire a few months to prevent the focus on the reasons for his dismissal from Google affecting the rest of the company's employees.

Now he has returned and has done so with a somewhat strange idea: Project Gem. It is a new phone that does not look much like those we are used to seeing in the market. Instead of betting on a huge or flexible screen, this new phone has a very, very elongated , closer in dimensions to what is expected of a remote control.

The phone will work with a version of Android that will have a very different use interface to the one we are used to, with cards to show the different apps . Applications, therefore, will have to adapt to the peculiar dimensions of the screen.

There will be a rear camera, a front with the same hole design that the front cameras of this year's Samsung Galaxy have and a fingerprint sensor on the back that will also serve to invoke the virtual assistant.

This assistant will be one of the most outstanding features of the phone. Essential has not yet given data of the processor, memory or the price and date of commercialization but it has explained that the virtual assistant will be key to interact with the device , with artificial intelligence far superior in features and features to which we are now accustomed to see on other phones.

The greatest difficulty that Project Gem faces, however, will not be the price or how they feel among the public its benefits, but the support that application developers give the device. Such an elongated screen will force you to rethink user interfaces to interact with the phone in comfort, an exercise difficult to justify if there is no mass audience willing to buy the device.
