The image of a Chavista paramilitary, masked and pointing with his 9mm to a group that was the opposition leader Juan Guaidó, leaders, journalists and citizens has gone around the world for its crudeness. And the condemnation of the international community has been categorical.

The high representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has labeled the attack against an anti-government demonstration involving the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, "unacceptable."

"Acts of this nature against the opposition and the democratically elected National Assembly and its members are unacceptable and make efforts more difficult for a political solution to the crisis," a spokeswoman for Borrell said in a statement.

At least five people were injured this Saturday amid the violence that broke out in an anti-government demonstration called by Guaidó in the Venezuelan state of Lara (west), opposition leaders reported. Guaido himself, recognized as interim president of Venezuela by more than 50 countries, told a local media that a "small group" used firearms and "detonated explosives" against their supporters.

"Spain rejects harassment"

Borrell insisted that the right of all political forces and civil society to demonstrate peacefully "must be respected." "Security forces have an obligation to avoid violence against protesters," he said.

The Government of Spain has also flatly rejected the attack that would have been perpetrated by "groups" against the demonstration. "Spain rejects the harassment of the president in charge of Guaidó, his environment and the representatives of the Venezuelan democratic opposition in general," said the statement released on Sunday by the Foreign Ministry, in which the Spanish Government transfers the wishes of the injured A speedy recovery.

On the same note, the Executive demands that Venezuelans be guaranteed the exercise of the legitimate right to peaceful demonstration and that all responsible actors refrain from making statements that may incite such acts.

The only sustainable way out of the deep "multidimensional crisis" that Venezuela is going through is a solution negotiated in an inclusive manner by the main political actors, according to the Spanish Executive, which concludes by reiterating its willingness to contribute to that end.

This reaction comes after Guaido himself denounced that an armed group tried to assassinate him when he participated in an anti-government demonstration and blamed the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro.

"The cowardly dictatorship tried to assassinate me. Our vehicle has more than nine bullet impacts," Guaidó warned in an address he transmitted through his social media accounts.
