The secretary general of the PSOE of León, Javier Alfonso Cendón, has promoted a correction on the official website of the United Nations (UN) on Saturday for referring to the Pablo Picasso's Guernica painting as "an artistic protest against the atrocities of the Republic during the Spanish Civil War. "
The socialist deputy also for León and spokesman for the Committee on Science, Innovation and Universities of the Congress of Deputies denounced the incident early this afternoon through his accounts on social networks and demanded a correction.
Less than three hours later, the Permanent Mission of Spain to the United Nations responded to Cendón through its official Twitter account and announced that it will proceed "to request an immediate rectification in the text published on the United Nations website".
Cendón, who presides over one of the groups dedicated to the recovery of historical memory in the province of Leon, the Association for the Study of Repression in León (AERLE), has considered "inadmissible" that this "historical aberration" has been committed .
Picasso painted his famous Guernica painting between the months of May and June 1937, after the bombing suffered by the Biscayan town on April 26 of that same year by the aircraft of the German Condor Legion, which fought in the Civil War on the side of the Francoist side.
