Mexican singer and songwriter Celso Piña has died on Wednesday at the age of 66 due to a heart attack for which he was admitted to an emergency hospital in the Mexican city of Monterrey.
"With deep pain we communicate the unexpected departure of a family member, our friend, the teacher Celso Piña, who died today in Monterrey at 12.38 (17.38 GMT) because of a heart attack," said his record label, La Tuna Group, in a brief statement.
The Tuna Group stressed that Piña leaves "an intense void" but a "great legacy forever." The artist had been taken to the San Vicente hospital in the last hours after having suffered a heart attack.
Piña, born on April 6, 1953 in Monterrey, capital of the Mexican state of Nuevo León, is recognized for having mixed the tropical sound of cumbia and vallenato with the northern regional genre of Mexico.
Composer, arranger, accordionist, Celso Piña is one of the pioneers in this type of mixes, with songs like "Yes Tomorrow" (1983), "You and the Clouds" (1989), "Mundo Colombia" (2002), "Cumbia of peace "(2006) or" Cumbia on the river "(2009).
His musical career took off from the 1980s when his father gave him an accordion and began playing cumbia, with which he gained popularity in the neighborhood where he grew up in Monterrey, at family parties and public dances.
Recognized self-taught accordion, he formed the musical band "Celso Piña and his Bogotá round".
The singer was scheduled to perform on September 5 in the municipality of Cadereyta, state of Nuevo León, according to information from his official Twitter site.
In 2002 he was nominated for two Grammy Awards in the categories of the best contemporary tropical album and the best alternative artist.
In his album "Barrio bravo", Celso Piña included collaborations with several Latin musicians of various genres, which gave rise to the success "Cumbia on the river".
Among those who participated in this album were Lila Downs, Julieta Venegas and the groups Control Machete, El Gran Silencio or Café Tacvba, among others.
