“We are certainly aware of the discussions that are taking place in the European Union on this matter. We are very closely monitoring the situation, ”said Peskov.

He noted that there is no unity of opinion on the Nord Stream - 2 in the European Union itself, but he expressed the hope that the EU countries will sort out this issue.

Peskov added that Nord Stream 2 is more cost effective than any other gas delivery route to the EU, there can be no safer and more stable route.

He also noted that the Kremlin strongly disagree with the opinion that the gas pipeline will increase the EU’s dependence on Russia, he said, the project is beneficial for both parties.

Earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the construction of the Nord Stream - 2 gas pipeline would not lead to Germany’s energy dependence on Russia.
