Eighty-six journalists from 'Diario 16' assumed in 1989 the risk of leaving their jobs to accompany their adventure of launching EL MUNDO to Pedro J. Ramírez, sentenced in March of that year as head of the header after months of pressures for their information and editorials critical of the Government of Felipe González.

That foundational seed, which consisted of understanding journalism as a way of life, in a passionate commitment to the truth and an inescapable duty of fidelity to its readers , gave in just seven months as a result «a new newspaper for a new generation of readers ». And for three decades, the most impressive exclusives, reports and journalistic initiatives, «without taboos, or closed areas, or shady areas, or sanctasantórums», to contribute decisively to the regeneration of democracy and the social transformation of the country.

That genuine inclination for rebellion, irreverence and nonconformity, a thousand times failed attempt to tame her for her countless enemies, will always prevail because she continues to permeate each of the walls of this house today and is the guarantee of her independence.

  • Fight. EL MUNDO was born with the vocation of satisfying the social need of a newspaper that investigates the abuses of power and informs the public so that it can effectively monitor its exercise. Under two premises expressed in the founding letter 'THE WORLD is yours'. The first: "In this newspaper there will be no taboos, no blind spots, no shadow areas, no sanctasantórums ." And in faith that, from the King down, governments of different sign, big businessmen and even that unattainable 'beautiful people' of the 'Ibercorp case' have suffered us. The second: " We will be uncompromising as it affects human rights , public freedoms, the dignity of consumers, respect for minority opinions and the defense of the environment against stupidity and greed." At this point, this newspaper is especially proud of the conviction with which it has defended freedom against terrorism and nationalism.
  • Influence . THE WORLD wants to be a tool of influence and intellectual reference according to the values of its editorial project. Our toughest denunciations, the most lacerating discoveries, have always been accompanied by in-depth analysis and constructive proposals binding public opinion: it is not enough for us to be notaries of the challenges of human civilization, our challenge will continue to be to contribute as participants assets in its evolution.
  • Nonconformism EL MUNDO journalists work with the ambition to go ahead of the information. They are not content to be passive recipients of official truth: they question, investigate and deepen it. While our competitors assumed the version of the LAGs as the initiative of two wayward policemen linked to the extreme right, Melchor Miralles discovered the evidence that accused an entire Ministry of Interior. When the whole country was resigned to the escape of Luis Roldán and half the world was looking for him without success, Antonio Rubio and Manuel Cerdán interviewed him at a hotel in Paris. The risk that this attitude entails was always worth it: infinite successes in front of a handful of mistakes.
  • Investigation. THE WORLD inaugurated a way of doing journalism that made school in the new generations. From the 'Filesa case' that Casimiro García-Abadillo, Jesús Cacho and Ana Aguirre signed to the 'sms' of Rajoy with Bárcenas that Eduardo Inda and Esteban Urreiztieta discovered, there is an uncountable list of scoops and journalists who forged the history of this newspaper ..
  • Rigor. The release of information from THE WORLD would never have reached the capacity to mark the agenda and public debate without the essential additive of credibility, expressed through the unwavering commitment to truthfulness and excellence. This method, always endorsed before the courts against those who have questioned it, is also a guarantee of trust for the best sources of Spanish journalism.
  • Irreverence The answering spirit of THE WORLD crystallizes in the unique informative vibration that only a newspaper that looks from you to power can offer . Only our newspaper dared to drop an entire director of the secret services or publish irregular contracts with the son-in-law of the King in the 'Nóos case', the tax fraud of the Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo or, much earlier, the scandal of the purchase of 'stock options' by Telefónica by its president, Juan Villalonga. Outside of corruption cases, EL MUNDO publishes today the supplement with the most irreverent look of the Spanish press: La Otra Crónica, a creation of Miguel Ángel Mellado.
  • Innovation EL MUNDO has been a pioneer in the development of creative and imaginative designs by the art direction headed by Carmelo G. Caderot, later succeeded by his disciple Rodrigo Sánchez. The push of that first team in the search for new formats and styles, always in the effort to show our stories and content in an entertaining and different way, sowed a habit of originality and innovation from which the leading digital newspaper of the press now benefits Spanish, the one that reads more and better: elmundo.es.
  • Reporting EL MUNDO's fast-paced style is devoted to the best tradition of American reporterism , a direct witness on the ground, who reproduces the Chronicle supplement today and who embodied legends such as our mourned Julio Anguita Parrado and Julio Fuentes (Sarajevo under the bombs), Alfonso Rojo (the last of Baghdad), our beloved Fernando Múgica or, now, the brave Javier Espinosa, who returned from the clutches of the IS.
  • Columnism The greatest newspaper writers have found in EL MUNDO the ideal space to give style and freedom to their firm. With the undisputed figure with Francisco Umbral's scarf as a reference, and the memory of the open umbrella of José Luis López de Lacalle, our newspaper remains a melting pot of the most original and committed intellectual voices of this time - Raúl del Pozo, Carmen Rigalt, Federico Jiménez Losantos, Luis María Anson, Arcadi Espada, Lucía Méndez ...- and door to the maturity of young talents -David Gistau, Antonio Lucas, Jorge Bustos, Emilia Landaluce, Rafa Latorre ...-.
  • Pluralism. THE WORLD is also a commitment to tolerance and freedom of expression: its pages reflect without complex the superior value of pluralism. The best coherence with a firm editorial line of well-defined contours and committed to the principles of political liberalism is to accept the discrepancy within the impassable limits of respect for the law and the essence of the intellectual project. That is why their information includes all points of view and their signatures fit the entire ideological spectrum of freedom.
