• Events: One of the 17 babies with the false werewolf syndrome due to Indian omeprazole

The Minister of Health, María Luisa Carcedo, explained on Wednesday that the mistake that has resulted in at least 17 children having been administered with crepe (minoxidil) instead of the gastric protector omeprazole was produced in the product packaging.

The ruling "part of an erroneous packaging," Carcedo told reporters at an event at the headquarters of his ministry on social inequalities, and explained that the company in charge of packaging introduced minoxidil into a package "that was labeled omeprazole."

The first cases, he said, were known in June through the pharmacovigilance system , which is responsible for detecting abnormalities in the use of any medication in the health system.

From the first moment it was suspected that there was a problem because the growth of hair through the body is not a known effect of omeprazole, said the minister.

"And, indeed, after analyzing it, a different product, minoxidil, was identified, which has other indications," he explained.

After that verification, all the defective lots were removed and there are currently none for sale, added Carcedo, who explained that the cases detected are from months ago.

In addition, as a precautionary measure, the company Farma-Química Sur SL de Málaga, responsible for the error, was closed.

At least 17 children from Cantabria, Andalusia and the Valencian Community suffer from hypertrichosis - a disease that is characterized by hair growth throughout the body - due to the aforementioned failure that caused them to ingest minoxidil -a vasodilator that is usually prescribed for alopecia- instead of omeprazole.
