If you are a woman with nursing children you should not abuse moisturizers or revitalizing products that are applied to the skin. The recent study published in the prestigious scientific journal Science of the Total Environment has detected the presence in breast milk of three types of bisphenols (BPA), organic compounds found in plastics and their derivatives.

Researchers at the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research in the Valencian Community ( Fisabio ) and the La Fe Health Research Institute ( IIS La Fe ) have detected Bisphenol A, F and S in the milk of nursing women and Some of the causes of the presence of these products harmful to the human organism, especially that of fetuses, babies and young children.

A finding that concludes with a recommendation: " Making a very intensive use of creams (several times every day for weeks) has a higher level of bisphenol A in milk than other women ." A warning that, according to scientists, is not alarming because non-intensive use (even daily, but not several times a day) "is not associated with higher levels of this substance."

The health message is clear: breast milk "is nutritionally very positive for babies, and the results of our current study indicate that it is also recommended from the point of view of food safety," according to one of the study's co-authors and director IIS La Fe scientist, Máximo Vento, who indicated that in the light of the results "one way to minimize exposure to Bisphenol A would be for breastfeeding women to try to restrict the application of creams and personal care products."

The analysis of 120 milk samples from nursing mothers - through liquid chromatography followed by mass spectrometry - has also explored which sociodemographic and lifestyle variables of breastfeeding women are associated with the variation in the amounts of Bisphenol A found in the different milk samples. The data showed that the milk of women living in rural areas has lower levels of these toxic substances than those of those living in urban areas .

"The objective of the study has been, on the one hand, to determine how much of these substances is present in breast milk and, on the other hand, to assess the level of risk for the most vulnerable population, that is, nursing babies," he said. the head of the Food Safety Area of ​​the Fisabio Foundation, Vicent Yusà,

The experts then calculated how much exposure newborns suffer to the substances, based on the amount of milk consumed and their body weight .

The first significant finding of the study was that Bisphenol A is detected in 83% of milk samples. However, "considering the levels detected, the daily exposure to bisphenol A that occurs in babies is, on average, 100 times lower than that marked by WHO," explains Yusà.

Regarding Bisphenol F and Bisphenol S, possible substitutes for Bisphenol A in the manufacturing processes of plastics, the analysis reveals that they are only detected, respectively, in 20% and 1% of the samples. The amounts found in the breast milk of the analyzed women are even lower than those of Bisphenol A.

The results were obtained by comparing the geometric mean of the exposure values ​​with the strictest safety threshold established by the WHO (4 micrograms of bisphenol A per day and kg of the baby's weight). Only above that amount could harmful effects on health begin, the health authority concludes from previous evidence of epidemiological studies in human populations and toxicity studies in animals.
