American pop singer Taylor Swift started the gala in New Jersey with rainbows and dancing.

- This is a very special week because I just released an album called "Lover". I have never been able to release an album the week before I do such a massive gala performance. So I've got a scratch between all the album commitments, Swift said in an interview before the show.

Swift's show involved a clear stance for the LGBT community, with the words "equality act" flashing on the stage, which is aimed at a bill that will strengthen the rights of these minorities.

Taylor Swift was also one of the most nominated for this year's gala and took home the heavy prize for this year's video, as well as video with a message (video for good) for "You need to calm down", a song she performed in her opening number.

Inflatable butt

American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish brought home his first figurine, for the breakthrough of the year, and Cardi B was honored for Best Hip Hop for "Money".

Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus took home another of the gal's heavyweights - the song of the year - with "Old town road (remix)". The rapper also showed dance talent during a fast-paced and futuristic performance.

Also, American singer Lizzy did her job to create a memorable number, by performing in front of a huge inflatable bikini butt.

Grande vs. Swift

In addition to Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande was a big favorite for this year's gala. The two artists had been nominated in ten categories each.

Grande was awarded an award early - this year's summer song, for "Boyfriend" which she does with Social House.

New for this year was also the category for best k-pop, where the popular band BTS took home the award for "Boy with luv", which Halsey also participates in.

The rapper Missy Elliott was awarded one of the gala's finest awards: the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. It has been speculated whether MTV was considering renaming the price in the footage of the documentary "Leaving Neverland", but that has not been done. However, it is only mentioned as the Video Vanguard Award in an advertising clip.
