Outgoing President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen led the island's presidential election, a crucial election for the future of relations with Beijing, according to partial results Saturday, January 11. The head of state claimed victory soon after the opposition admitted defeat.
In office since 2016, Tsai Ing-wen was given the victory at around 8:00 p.m. (12:00 p.m. GMT) by the main local media after the count of more than half of the votes. The TV channel SET TV credited Ms. Tsai with 57.7% of the votes and CtiTV with 56.7% against its main opponent Han Kuo-yu, after the counting of more than 10 million ballots.
The main opposition candidate in Taiwan, Han Kuo-yu, conceded a defeat in the presidential election on Saturday against the outgoing, Tsai Ing-wen.
"I called President Tsai to congratulate her," Han Kuo-yu told a crowd of voters in the southern Taiwan city of Kaohsiung. "She has a new term for the next four years."
