On November 9, 1989, the GDR government lifted restrictions on communications between the territories of the republic and West Berlin, a special political unit that, after the Second World War, was under the control of the Anglo-French-American military contingent. After this announcement, thousands of people moved to the wall enclosing West Berlin. Frontier guards who did not receive orders first pushed them, but then they were forced to step aside and open the free passage. In 1990, border control was officially abolished in Berlin, and most of the wall was demolished. These events marked the beginning of the process of German unification.
