Sylvie Goulard was indicted by the judge in charge of the investigation of the allegedly fictitious jobs of assistants of MEPs. The former centrist MEP (MoDem) could not be appointed to the new European Commission because of this investigation.
Former MoDem MEP Sylvie Goulard , now deputy governor of the Banque de France, has been indicted for embezzlement of public funds, following her hearing by the judge to investigate allegedly fictitious jobs in France. within the European Parliament.
In concrete terms, it is for the magistrates to determine whether parliamentary assistants were paid by the European Parliament when in reality they were performing tasks for their party. For more than two years, this case weighs heavily on the MoDem.
The opening of the preliminary investigation, in June 2017, led to the resignation of the three main figures of the centrist party, one month after their entry into the government: François Bayrou had resigned from the Ministry of Justice, Marielle de Sarnez to European Affairs and Sylvie Goulard with the Armies. The latter, targeted by an administrative procedure of the European Parliament, had accepted last summer to pay 45,000 euros corresponding to the salary of an assistant for which she could not provide evidence of work.
Despite this regulation, the case continued to hurt Sylvie Goulard since last October, her candidacy for the European Commission was rejected , notably because of possible legal proceedings that she would incur.
In total, about fifteen people should be heard by the prosecutor's office in this case, including the chairman of the MoDem, François Bayrou, convened next Friday.
