Five young French tourists were arrested in Benidorm, Spain. They are suspected of having raped a 20-year-old Norwegian in their vacation home.

Five young French men were arrested Wednesday in Spain on suspicion of having raped a 20-year-old Norwegian in a tourist accommodation in the southern Benidorm resort, the Civil Guard said.

Identified through their profiles on social networks

The young woman told investigators that she was contacted through a social network by young French people, before joining them with a friend, and then staying alone with them in their vacation home where they allegedly raped her. The two Norwegian friends were able to provide identity elements of five French, aged 18 to 19, through their profiles on social networks.

A French policeman participated in the police operation that allowed the arrest of suspects Wednesday morning before they go back to France, said the Civil Guard. The gendarme is temporarily assigned to Benidorm, as part of a summer collaboration program. During the summer, patrols include foreign police, on sites frequented by tourists, told AFP a spokesman for the Civil Guard.

Spanish media speak of a "new pack"

The Spanish media immediately titled "a new pack", referring to the gang rape of an 18-year-old girl by five Spaniards in Pamplona in 2016, which sparked a major feminist mobilization in Spain.
