December 08, 2019It was one of the last survivors of the Auschwitz death camp, Piero Terracina died today in Rome at the age of 91. Born in the capital in a Jewish family, in the autumn of 1938, due to the enactment of the racial laws in Italy, he was expelled from the public school. Terracina continued his studies in Jewish schools until, after escaping the round-up of 16 October 1943, he was arrested in Rome, on 7 April 1944, on the recommendation of an informer, with the whole family: his parents, his sister Anna, the brothers Cesare and Leo, uncle Amedeo, grandfather Leone David.

Held for a few days in the Rome prison of Regina Coeli, after a brief stay in the Fossoli camp, on 17 May 1944 they were sent for deportation. Of the eight members of his family, Piero Terracina was the only one to return to Italy.

Dureghello, with Terracina disappears bastion of memory
The Jewish Community of Rome "mourns the disappearance of a bastion of Memory. Piero Terracina represented the courage to remember, overcoming the pain of his endless family and of what was seen and suffered in the hell of Auschwitz, so that everyone knew the horror of the Nazi death camps ". Thus Ruth Dureghello, president of the Jewish Community of Rome, recalls Piero Terracina, one of the last survivors of Auschwitz. And he continues: "Today we mourn a great man and our pain will have to be transformed into a force of will in order not to allow the deniers to revive the anti-Semitic hatred".

Zingaretti: "His words will continue to live"
"Piero Terracina has left us. I have no words to describe the pain that his death causes me. Piero, we always remember ready to tell the horror of Auschwitz, always ready to convey to young people the importance of memory". The secretary of the Pd Nicola Zingaretti writes it on Facebook. "The testimony had become the mission of life. His words will continue to live in the eyes of the many boys he met in these years - he adds -. Piero was a free person even in denouncing the omissions and silences of these years. His rigor, his pain, his restlessness in seeing the return of dangerous signals must be pushed to our commitment ".
