The robber Rédoine Faïd, detained in one of the most secure prisons in France, started a hunger and thirst strike on Thursday to protest against his detention conditions, his lawyers learned on Friday. Redoine Faïd is imprisoned in solitary confinement at the Vendin-le-Vieil prison center (Pas-de-Calais). He must appear from Thursday before the assizes of Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais) for his trial on appeal following the robbery of an armored van in 2011.

"It has been months that we have been alerting to the prison situation that is his," said Franck Berton, confirming that his client has started a hunger and thirst strike, as announced by the weekly L'Obs . “He undergoes four to five strip searches a day. It is no parlor other than behind a plexiglass and with a hygiaphone. He has no physical contact with his family. When he moves through the prison corridors, he is handcuffed and surrounded by four to six special guards who wear riot gear, hooded. This is delirious, ”carried away the lawyer, who ensures the defense of Rédoine Faïd with Me Yasmina Belmokhtar and Me Hugues Vigier.

A transfer request

Before the opening of his trial Thursday, his lawyers had requested that he be transferred to the nearest prison to the Saint-Omer court in Longuenesse. “The law requires that he be transferred to the penitentiary establishment of the seat of the assize court. The Attorney General wrote to us that the prison administration refuses to apply the law for security reasons, ”deplored Me Berton. "The prison administration, therefore for me the Chancellery, does not respect the law, it is to despair".

He announced his intention to "seize the administrative tribunal of an excess of power" against the Minister of Justice, Nicole Belloubet, "as of next week". When asked, the prison administration did not respond. Redoine Faïd has already been sentenced to twenty-five years' imprisonment for his role as "organizer" of a failed robbery in 2010 that had cost the life of a municipal police officer.

He was also sentenced to ten years in prison in March 2017 for his escape from the Lille-Sequedin prison (North) in April 2013. He appealed this decision. He is still to be tried for his spectacular escape from Réau prison (Seine-et-Marne) in July 2018.
