It is a cry of anger for municipal candidates for the mayor of Marseille. This Wednesday, the members of the Marseille schools collective presented their studies on the state of establishments in the second city of France to the press, as well as a series of proposals which they request to be adopted urgently by the future mayor of the city.

For a year, the members of this collective, which claims to be “militant” and which is one of the signatories of the Democratic Pact, a left-wing citizen movement which intends to influence the next election, questioned parents via an online questionnaire. 'students and directors of Marseilles public schools on the state of the built environment, material and human resources.

Lack of municipal staff

Out of the 184 responses obtained, which correspond to 118 schools, or a quarter of the Marseille schools, the parents of pupils, who mainly participated in this study, draws an overwhelming conclusion. According to this study, 82.2% of reports complain of a lack of municipal staff in schools. A "shortage of municipal staff, and therefore in the rate of supervision" which would endanger children according to them.

More than one report in two reports the poor condition of school buildings, a source of daily concern according to this collective. "It is unacceptable to have children who go to school wondering if the false ceiling will not fall on their heads," says Nicolas Steinfels, a parent of a student and member of the group, citing 10 cases of collapse found in the investigation.

A series of proposals

No less than 35.6% of the responses report defective sanitation in their schools. "It's far from anecdotal," says Nicolas Stenfels. We have children who have cystitis because the toilets are out of order. "

Faced with this observation, the collective has developed a series of proposals which, according to them, should be appropriated by candidates for municipal elections, broken down into nine themes, from personnel management to school maintenance, including extracurricular activities.

"The minimum required"

This program therefore requires the education of all children, including those from undocumented families, the non-exceeding of the legal minimum in the subsidies granted to private schools, or even the fight against pollution. So many requests that represent "the minimum required", according to the collective.

"All those who will not apply it under the pretext, which we consider as fallacious, of the lack of money, will not be carrying a program of rupture, estimates Cécile Baron, another member of the collective. We will be there to wear it, before and after the election. The city of Marseille spent 224 million euros on education as a reminder in 2019.
