08 October 2019The cosmologist James Peebles and the planetary scientists Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics 2019 for their discoveries related to the cosmological background radiation and the first planets outside the Solar System: discoveries that changed our image of the 'universe. This was announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

The award was assigned half to James Peebles "for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology" and the other half in conjunction with Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz "for the discovery of an exoplanet in orbit around a solar star".
